Netflix & Chill – Episode 2

The Crown – There are those little moments in live upon which I ask myself the question if The Queen ever had to put up with that shit. Just little things, like butter straight from the fridge being too hard to spread, causing one’s toast to break when one attempts to butter it. Or shoelaces breaking off in one’s hands, just when one is in a hurry to leave one’s apartment. Or an incessantly chatty old bat nattering away on the phone… Yes, I know it’s my mother, but still! In such moments it is important one does remind oneself that, as a nobody, at least one doesn’t have to put up with one’s every fekking move being watched. Anonymity is the one great luxury most of us take for granted. All this makes The Crown on Netflix so deliciously voyeuristic. I’ve been re-watching previous seasons in anticipation of the new season’s release, anytime soon now, surely? I’ve been using this series as a prompt for looking up historical events, as one most definitely shouldn’t take The Crown as fact. Obviously the biggest question is if Prince Phillip’s behind was as bootylicious as Matt Smith’s.

Young Sheldon – This couldn’t be further away from The Crown if it tried, but variety is the spice of life. I’ve never watched The Big Bang Theory from start to finish, but that doesn’t stop me from thoroughly enjoying the cozy, funny, heartfelt quirkiness of this spinoff prequel in which we explore Sheldon Cooper’s youth. I’m glad I’ve only watched about half of the available episodes on Netflix before and during my recent holiday. The remaining episodes act as quite the comfort blanket and are keeping me from burning up on reentry into reality.

One Piece – The offer of anime continues to grow on Netflix, but this live action interpretation of a beloved anime classic is a tour the force, as far as I’m concerned. The styling clearly was a labour of love and the mix of action, magic and emotion pulled me into the story with ease. We’re following Luffy, a young wannabe pirate, assembling a crew of sorts to help him find the One Piece, the lost treasure of a illustrious pirate of the past. Finding this treasure would make him “King of the Pirates”. The rollercoaster of emotions I experienced with this first season already makes me hungry for the second instalment.

The Midnight Club – I recently binged this series, although I knew that there wasn’t going to be a second season. Apparently the makers have signed a deal with another streaming service and won’t be making any more of their signature thriller / horror projects for Netflix. Chances that The Midnight Club will get picked up by another streaming services for a second season are very slim. It’s sad, because I feel there was great potential for at least another set of 10 episodes and part of the mystery remains unsolved at the end of the first season. Fans of Locke & Key will probably enjoy the house that was used for the exterior scenes. It’s one of those romantic and moody Victorian mansions somewhere in British Columbia that easily inspire a spooky mystery. I particularly enjoyed how this show weaves various mini stories in with the main story. The Midnight Club meets up a night to tell each other stories and we get to see these stories acted out.

Netflix isn’t my only source of entertainment. I find that Nord VPN is quite effective at convincing Channel 4 that I’m in the UK, while I’m not. I’m usually the last one to leave work and often I’m there up to two hours after everyone else has left. Once I’m all by myself, I switch on the iPad and start up the More 4 live stream to enjoy the comforting company of background tv, as I get some more work done. Those two hours just fly by! It’s start with the bitchy end of Four In A Bed, followed by Love it Or List it and finish off with The Secret Life of the Zoo, because, well… animals! I need to be quite sneaky to watch UK tv channels on the iPad. I had to set my Apple account to an address in the UK to be able to download the necessary apps and even need to put it on UK time. I’m such a sneaky little bastard. Is it weird that I enjoy the adverts on UK tv? I mean, how can you not like those meerkats?
