Of course Pride is still necessary! Hard earned rights are all to easily overturned and we can’t become complacent. Not to mention all the places in the world where acting on the love that dare not speak its name can still land you in prison, or worse, a very unfashionable shopping mall. The horror! Although, I’m sure my avatar could carry of an 80’s look with ease. Alas, the horrors of the real world can’t be so easily brushed aside with a joke. All flippancy aside, there still is plenty of political work to do. There are plenty of serious conversations to be had that actually include us instead of just talking about us.
Stockholm dedicates a week to Pride at the beginning of August, with a Pride village, lots of mini concerts (it’s a wonderful outlet for all those Eurovision celebrities), exhibitions, performances and workshops, ending with a parade through the city in Stockholm. It’s amazing to see just how many families turn up. To be fair, it is a rather tame parade. Sure, you’ll see some shirtless men, you may see the occasional ass cheek hanging out (usually in pairs and attached to a person) but it doesn’t get too raunchy in public. All in all one could say it is child friendly. It so clearly demonstrate that there is a strong connections between the colourful LGBTQA+ folk and those that live a more, shall we say “straightforward” life. After all, most gay kids come from straight parents. If you don’t like us, stop making us!
Any straight person who thinks they don’t know any gay people, most probably have their head up their ass and while, truth be told, I envy their physical flexibility, I simply cannot get over the rigidity of some people’s mind. The cold hard NO to anything that doesn’t fit in their narrow definition of normal seems so alien to me. Do they realise that there is no such thing as normal? The person who’s average in every single way, does not exist. Everybody is just every so slightly weird and that is a wonderful thing.
