The phrase “better angels of our nature” was popularised by President Abraham Lincoln, though apparently he didn’t coin it. Nevertheless, it probably is one of the stronger thought provoking expressions used in an inauguration address. Sadly, as strong as that speech may have been, it did not stop the civil war. One can only wonder, if Failing President Trump gets to take the helm again in January next year, what utter vile self-serving drivel will be coming forward from those annoying pouty lips, as he plays the invisible accordion with his tiny little hands. It most certainly will not be appealing to anyone’s better angels, of that I’m sure.
OK, so maybe I should leave politics out of this blog. Maybe I’ll be losing what little followers I have. I’m just a silly middle-aged Belgian, living in Sweden who should stick to making pretty avatars and gay shit, right? It’s not like I have much of a platform anyway. But isn’t it interesting though, that as soon as someone with a bigger platform does open their mouth in favour of the democrats, it’s usually the republicans and overpaid soulless people on the Fox “News” Channel who will be the first to say that the actor, musician, artist, etc. in question should stay out of politics. Meanwhile they’ll happily embrace the few famous (hasbeens) who wholeheartedly put their support behind the Fart Meister himself. It’s like they have no notion of the meaning of the word hypocrisy at all. Maybe I wouldn’t care so much, if it wasn’t for the fact that at some point the expression “leader of the free world” started to be used to refer the the president of the U.S.A. Surely, as a citizen of that free world, I’m entitled to at least have a voice in this game?
I simply can’t align myself with the constant stream of hate that’s coming from the right. They hate LGBTQ+ people, especially the transgender ones. They hate and fearmonger about migrants, though I can’t help but wonder who they’ll start punchding down on if they’d be able to evict anyone who isn’t ‘Merican enough. They hate anyone who isn’t the purest of lily white. They hate strong free women. They hate literature that doesn’t server their agenda. Quite simply, they seem to just hate.
Obviously, as a gay man, voting conservative would be a vote against my own best interests anyway. I find it mind boggling that there is such a thing as a “conservative gay man”. I guess I’ll never be rich enough to be able to understand the mindset of millionaires, let alone billionaires. Apparently quite often people who win the lottery, tend to become more right leaning. Maybe they don’t mind the idea of living in a real world version of The Handmaid’s Tale, as long as they get to pay as little taxes a possible, conveniently forgetting that there are no openly gay men in The Handmaid’s Tale. These conservative gay men are supporting a world that doesn’t want them in it.
In conclusion: I count myself lucky I was born in Europe, especially in a time where there’s free movement of people within the European Union. I find it worrying that in many countries of the union, there has been a noticeable move to the right. As I believe that the U.S.A. is a strong example whichever way it leans, I sincerely hope that come January 2025, it will be President Kamala Harris who’s giving her inauguration speech and it will be one of hope, strength, unity and a brighter future for all. It would be foolish to say that none of the issues trumpeted by the right have any truth in them, but when have issues ever been resolved with hatred? In the end, all what’s left is hope, right? And with that I return to the pretty avis and gay shit…
