Clearing out the wardrobe – Episode 15

One does not spend the better part of nine years in Second Life™ with a passion for creating looks, without accumulating a bunch of so called Outfits that are somewhat outdated. This is where my ‘Clearing out the wardrobe’ series comes in nicely, as an excuse to grab one of those golden oldies and spruce it up with more recent and/or higher quality items. To avoid that this becomes a source of frustration rather than relaxation, I’m not too hard on myself if I’m not able to find something particularly similar to what I used for the old outfit. I’m happy to strive for something between perfection and ‘fuck it, that’ll do’. It’s a general attitude to life I can highly recommend.

The old look dates back to the time when Meshbody was still known as The Mesh Project, or TMP. They were one of the first creators in SL to bring a mesh body to market and were a somewhat controversial brand with their approach. Mesh heads were even newer when I first started in SL and though there was very little one could do with the shape, I still enjoyed how smooth the lines were from all angles, compared to the ‘system’ head with all it’s weird folds and jagged seams. I soon found myself all kitted out in the TMP Deluxe mesh body and head and only went back to the system head when I was putting together an example of a low-cost look for the blog. You know what they say: ones you go mesh you don’t go… eehm… besh?

In this case I struggled finding a high quality extremely low riding pair of jeans.

  1. For the old look I was wearing the Paolo jeans by not so bad. I guess this doesn’t even count as just low riding. They were barely hanging on, really. I had a proper ‘feel the wind on your cheeks’ look going on there, but it always bothered me that the two halves of the jeans seamed to crash into each other with most poses and walks. Moving away from the TMP body, I can start looking at some newer options for jeans…
  2. If you like the look of baggy low hanging pants with boxer shorts, then Kalback is a good place to start. You won’t feel quite so exposed with their Chill Jeans (M3) and even a single colour version comes with 20 texture options for the boxers. (rigged for Gianni, Jake, Legacy and Athletic)
  3. The very tight Luke Low Rise Jeans from Riot strongly accentuate your buttocks and come with lots of built-in thong and boxers options, but they’re not really all that low riding. If you leave off the underwear, you don’t even get a coin slot. (rigged for Gianni, Jake and Legacy)
  4. The Western Jeans by Ardor are on the other side of the extreme and are open as well as very low hanging. What’s keeping them up? If there’s no gravity in Second Life, what’s keeping us from just floating away into the pixel void? Still, this brand has a distinctive style and they’re bound to have a fan base of sorts. I can appreciate their playfulness, though I’d like a bit more attention to detail and beter texturing. I hadn’t heard of them before I started looking for low riding jeans, but I’m appreciating the find. You’ll be able to combine these baggy jeans with most underwear, providing your bulge isn’t something that would make an elephant look twice. May I suggest getting into the Valentines mood early with the Pixel Heart version of the Devlin Briefs by Noche. (Jeans rigged for Jake and Legacy, briefs rigged for Jake, Legacy and Athletic)
  5. The next option I’m exposing you to are the Ephmi Jeans by Thirst, with a built-in jockstrap. I’m not overly impressed with the texturing of the jeans, but if you go for one of the darker textures, you’ll find they cover a multitude of sins. The fit is great and you won’t find many examples in SL with a jockstrap. (rigged for Jake and Legacy)

If I wouldn’t be looking for a replacement that is more sympathetic to the old look, I probably would have gone with jeans by Lapointe & Bastchild, Legal Insanity or Deadwool, but for now I’ll settle on the Thirst Ephmi jeans. For the top I’m quite happy with the new Titus tank by Noche. The style is different from the old tank, but the execution is exquisite and the important part is that its a crop top. And with that, the look has been updated. I’ll leave you with the rest of the credits below and will strategically park myself somewhere to be admired. If you happen to come across a nice pair of long slung jeans on your Second Life travels, feel free to mention them in a comment, either here or in Flickr.
